Scientists are researching and developing environmental (e.g., acoustic, non-acoustic) and ship movement information to improve planning for expeditionary warfare. Engineers are applying the principles of User Centered Design (UCD) and Human Computer Interface (HCI) to the Expeditionary Warfare Decision Support System (EDSS). Efforts are coordinated with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington D.C. and the developers of EDSS at Science Applications Incorporated Corporation (SAIC) in McClean, VA. The sponsor is the Office of Naval Research.

Specifically, APL-UW is:
  1. Presenting an evaluation of the EDSS UI Solutions Design to EDSS system designers at joint workshops with NRL;

  2. Working with NRL to develop a task analysis by learning to use EDSS, interviewing developers and expert users, reviewing EDSS exercises, and conducting operational scenarios;

  3. Developing recommendations and solutions for EDSS interface designs that allow greater usability of the software program;

  4. Working with NRL to conduct a performance evaluation of EDSS interfaces.
